Translators and interpreters play crucial roles in wars and conflicts, navigating complex power dynamics amid state and non-state violence. This course delves into the history of interpretation in global crises, examining examples from the USA, China, Japan, Afghanistan, and Iraq. We will explore the elusive role and status of interpreters and the ethical dilemmas they face in high-risk environments. Topics include court interpreting in the U.S. immigration crisis, translation and interpretation during World War II, and interpreting in Afghanistan and Iraq. The course will focus on the decision-making, practices, identity of translators and interpreters, and the limitations of traditional ethical codes. Course materials include history, ethnography, interviews, movies, and documentaries. Students will be required to complete a final essay.
