This course delves into the intricate intersections of hip-hop with gender, sexuality, race, and social issues, exploring these themes through music, films, lyrics, and new media. Originating in Brooklyn nearly 40 years ago, hip-hop has grown from its roots as street music into a major cultural force, influencing various facets of American culture, from fashion to movies, sports, and beyond. Rather than focusing solely on hip-hop as a musical genre, this course examines its broader cultural impact, tracing its historical development from pioneers like Dr. Dre to influential artists like Kendrick Lamar. We’ll explore how hip-hop has shaped and intersected with other genres and cultural forms, including film, fashion, and dance. In addition to this historical perspective, we’ll also engage with contemporary issues within hip-hop, such as the ongoing rap diss feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. This rivalry not only highlights the dynamic and contested nature of hip-hop but also reflects broader cultural and personal conflicts within the genre. Key questions addressed will include: What defines the “spirit” of hip-hop? How are gender, race, and sexuality addressed and challenged within hip-hop culture? What social issues has hip-hop highlighted, and how does it critique these issues? What role does visual representation play in hip-hop? And how do different regional styles, such as those from the east, west, and south, contribute to the genre’s diverse landscape? Keywords: Hip-hop, N-Word, Cultural Events, Self-Identification, Masculinity, Racialization, Class, Female Representation, Education, and Employment
