Going viral with its astonishing visual displays and catchy melodies, K-Pop (a.k.a Korean Pop) obtains its worldwide acknowledgment as a major music genre. While its global success has been considered to be possible by its hybridization of various cultural elements, some K-Pop consumers still assume the prefix “K” in K-Pop refers to Korean-ness, categorizing it as a specific regional genre rather than a transnational object. However, as K-Pop goes beyond its musical boundaries, adapted by other cultural genres (films, online games, and musicals) and recreated by various subjects (fan cover video, fan activism etc.), the meaning, value, and definition of K-Pop are constantly subverted and rebuilt. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to consider: What is K-Pop? What does “K” in K-Pop represent? How is the prefix “K” perceived differently in different cultural/national contexts? Who builds the boundaries of K-Pop and who blurs them? By examining how collective and individual identities are discursively signaled in K-Pop musical contents and K-Pop music industry, this course challenges the notion of cultural authenticity and encourages students to have a critical look at identity issues appearing in K-Pop phenomenon. This is a distance learning course that will count towards the AAAS major.
