This course examines the history of the early United States from the colonization of North America through to post-Civil War Reconstruction. Utilizing readings, video lectures, and discussion boards, students will explore the interactions between Native peoples, Europeans and Africans, highlighting the diverse thoughts, beliefs, and cultures of early America. Major topics include the wide array of colonial experiences, the American Revolution, early United States westward expansion, the Market Revolution, the growth of American slavery, sectional conflicts leading to the American Civil War, and the challenges of Reconstruction. Students will leave the class with a better understanding of the long-term consequences of the early American past as well as its world of diverse people and realities.
