Take your class online with SUNY
You will learn the same curriculum as our on-campus students
This course surveys U.S. history from the end of the Civil War era to the dawn of the 21st century, while introducing you to the key tenets of historical thinking. We'll explore major themes and broad changes that contributed to the making of modern America by studying the nation’s diverse peoples; political institutions; economic patterns; and cultural developments. You'll be reading some scholarly accounts (which historians call "secondary sources"), identifying the authors' arguments, and comparing the arguments of different scholars. You will also encounter a wide range of materials that historians look to in order to determine "what happened." These "primary sources" include newspaper and magazine articles, speeches, oral histories, photographs, cartoons, statistics, etc.
