The purpose of this course is to trace and investigate the history of the Modern Middle East from 1800-present through a series of online lectures, primary and secondary sources and develop the student’s analytical tools for further research and learning. Assessment is heavily based on the papers that will be prepared throughout the winter semester. Topic that will be covered include but is not limited to the integration of the Middle East into the modern world system; the nature, impact, and lasting effects of European imperialism; the legacy of former Middle Eastern empires; creation of nation states in the region; genocide and ethnic cleansing; as well as more recent occurrences in the region.
