This course explores the historical ties between France and the Ottoman Empire, from the onset of their alliance in the sixteenth century to the post-French Revolution era. It examines how the Ottoman Empire was perceived in French political culture and how the French Revolution changed these perceptions, with a particular focus on the notion of oriental despotism. Moreover, this course also explores how the Ottomans viewed the French Revolution and how their perception of France and the Revolution changed after Napoléon’s Egyptian Campaign.
