This course examines the influence of Muslims in China from the 7th century to the present. Despite their relatively small population, Muslim merchants played a key role in trade, especially along the Silk Road, facilitating the exchange of goods, ideas, and technologies. The course explores how Muslims maintained their religious and cultural identity in China while interacting with local society. Today, Muslims, such as Hui and Uyghur, form distinct communities within China. We will discuss their current position, challenges, and opportunities in modern Chinese society, examining how they navigate their unique identity in a rapidly changing world.
