Technological advances in the 19th century facilitated global circulations of knowledge, people, practices and experiences which contributed not only the novel productions of the knowledge of science but also showed their mutual relationships with imperialism. This fully online course explores the circulation of scientific knowledge with particular reference to biological evolution in the 19th and 20th centuries in different regions of the globe, such as Middle East, Europe, Asia, and North America. It firstly aims to show how the scientific production in the cultures among the above-mentioned regions demonstrated mutual dependent interaction. Its second objective is to show how these cultures, who have a basic understanding of biological evolution, developed a novel idea of evolution through an analysis of each culture’s approaches to science and religion, and political contexts. Finally, it shows how these final outcomes of evolutionary ideas mutually helped the practices of imperialism in the above-mentioned regions. Students will be assessed through weekly participation in an online discussion forum via Brightspace over the assigned course readings and videos together with lecture videos, and three short papers at the end of each module.
