This Course takes a close look at Cardi B's emerging canon of music and visuals, as well as texts by African American, Afro-Latin, and Caribbean writers that center on black womanhood and sexual expression. Cardi B inhabits Plural identities at once - a black Latina woman of Caribbean descent - whose intersectional qualities provide a springboard into closer examination of feminist thought. Central to understanding these feminist concepts would be an exploration of feminists such as Patricia Hill Collins, Bell Hooks, Saidiya Hartman, and Aurora Vergara whose work goes beyond the boundaries of national identity to explore the plurality of womanhood within the black diaspora. Students will use Cardi B's artistic aesthetic as a critical means of exploring issues of race, sexuality, and gender roles.
