Life imitates art far more than art imitates life". This quote by Oscar Wilde would probably be attested to by a vast majority of the queer community. Much of what we see in "mainstream" entertainment can be traced to the LGBTQ+ community. From fashion, to music, to some of our favorite sayings, the queer community has cultural impact like no other. But how do members of the queer community experience themselves in art? Examining cultural representation in recent and historical works of art, particularly plays and musicals, presents the opportunity to explore both how the LGBTQ+ community has been represented in American culture and how the LGBTQ+ community seeks to represent itself in American culture. This course will allow students to discover the impacts of cross-cultural identities through the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality. These conversations couldn't be more relevant: queer culture is everywhere (Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour, anyone?)! This course will give students the #Unique experience of an array of voices from the LGBTQ+ community, on and off stage.
