Catalog Course Description
Students study jazz as an American art form, tracing its African and European beginnings to the present time, with emphasis on the contributions made to Jazz by Black Americans.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Develop the skills necessary to identify basic musical activity in Jazz Recordings.
2. Recognize and explain (through listening, study, and observation) the differences between various musical styles of Jazz.
3. Critique fundamental elements of Historical Jazz performances and related key contributors.
4. Demonstrate understanding of at least one principal form of artistic expression and the creative process inherent within Jazz Performance.
5. To identify and express an understanding of the environment, the social conditions, and the personal challenges of pioneering Jazz Musicians.
