Catalog Course Description

Students analyze the development of popular music in America in the context of its role in popular culture and cultural studies.  Musical styles from the early 20th century to the present may be covered.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Discuss the development and history of popular music in the United States.
2. Identify musical styles from ragtime through Rock ‘n Roll.
3. Understand the importance of America’s original art form (Jazz) to the development of Popular music in a whole.
4. Understand how pop music is influenced by and influences the social political atmosphere in the United States.
