This course centers on the sociological analysis of family and relationship dynamics and demographics within U.S. society, including a cross-cultural comparison. Topics will include families in historical perspective, theories and methods for studying families, mate selection, gender, sexuality, love and intimacy, marriage, divorce, remarriage, parenting, the political economy of family, abuse and violence, family diversity, and social change. This course satisfies SUNY General Education learning outcomes for Social Science. Some work that you do in this course (tests, papers, projects) may be retained by Jefferson Community College in order to demonstrate to SUNY overall levels of student achievement in General Education. Prerequisite: ENG 100-College Composition or placement testing into ENG 101-Research & Composition. 3 cr. 3 Lec.
