This is a survey of the major forms of English literature from the Romantic period to the present. Representative selections from English authors engage issues of gender roles and identity; race; economic disparity; environmental and human exploitation; and the challenges of a society in the midst of change. References in the literature to British imperialism and its consequences for cultures and nations elicit discussion of rights, access, equity and autonomous participation to past, current or future social justice action.
