In an era marked by the enduring impacts of colonialism, this course explores how colonial
legacies shape contemporary systems of crime, punishment, and justice. . By examining
criminology through decolonial and feminist lenses, we will uncover the ways in which race,
gender, and justice intersect within punitive structures and legal systems. Students will explore
how historical colonial practices have shaped contemporary legal and punitive systems,
perpetuating injustices that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. Through critical readings, case studies, and discussions, we will engage with decolonial frameworks that challenge traditional criminological theories and practices. This course emphasizes the
importance of Indigenous perspectives, Southern criminology, and the voices of those
historically silenced in discussions about crime and justice. By examining case studies and
contemporary social movements, students will be encouraged to imagine and propose equitable and transformative forms of justice that dismantle oppressive structures. Together, we will explore how the principles of decolonization can inform our understanding of justice, advocating for community-based alternatives that prioritize healing, collective care, and solidarity. Ultimately, this course aims to equip students with the analytical tools to critically assess the ongoing effects of colonialism in the realm of criminology and to envision a more just and equitable future for all communities.
