This course introduces students to the theoretical foundations of contemporary critical criminology, focusing on some of the major sub-theories and theorists to come out of this growing field of criminological study. Students explore critical race theory, feminist theories, green criminology, convict criminology, abolitionist criminology, realism/ultra-realism, rural criminology, and postmodern criminology. Select topics in critical criminology, advanced through review of disciplinary studies as well as current events, include police and prison abolition, state violence, antifeminism, media and crime, current issues in immigration, and the militarization of law enforcement.
