This course explores educational patterns in socialization and schooling and brings a comparative and historical anthropological perspective to contemporary United States American K-12 education. We examine the role that education plays in the transmission of particular knowledges, histories, values and attitudes to young members of society and the ways that the educational system may serve as an agent of social change and/or of stasis. We use a cross-cultural perspective to gain insight into other systems and to the particularities of the United States educational system.
