This course explores literary depictions of utopias a€”that is, fictional societies that critique real societies. Beginning with ancient texts by Plato and Thomas More and moving to the modern era, it examines models of good societies (fictional societies that function as blueprints), bad societies (fictional societies that function as warnings, and anti-utopias (fictional societies that function as mirrors or satires). We will examine the way in which each text uses a fictional outsider figure to draw attention to problems in the author€™s society such as social injustice, economic injustice, imperialism, and authoritarianism. Varies.
