This course provides an overview of the counseling profession. The text and assignments are designed to introduce students to the field of counseling. Topics include: overview of professional specialty areas; common concerns of beginning helpers; counselor skills, methods, and theoretical foundations; role of values; stages of the helping process; understanding diversity; ethical and legal issues; group counseling, community, and crisis work; counselor reflective practice, wellness, and self-care. Through class readings, videos, and discussions student will explore professional roles, functions, and relationships involved in the practice of counseling.
