This course will introduce counseling students to group counseling theory and practice. The content will include the interpersonal theory of groups, types of groups, group stages of development, group dynamics, therapeutic factors, goals, norms, group membership, leadership, and interpersonal feedback. Additionally, the application of counseling theory to groups, multicultural considerations, and group work with different populations will be discussed. Students will learn about these topics from assigned readings, in class lectures and discussion, classroom experiential exercises, group projects, and written assignments. Finally, all class members will participate in experiential groups co-facilitated by advanced students in counseling psychology and counselor education.
