CHB 530 is designed to provide a graduate-level overview of substance use and substance use disorders from a public health perspective. Substance use disorders continue to be a major public health problem in the United States. This course will cover the etiology of substance use and substance use disorders, theoretical models of addiction, the psychological and physiological effects of various drugs and how they relate to the experience of specific withdrawal symptoms, as well as prevention, intervention, and treatment strategies. The majority of this course will be informed by the Biopsychosocial and Social Ecological Models. Specifically, we will discuss how substance use and substance use disorders are impacted by each level of the Social Ecological Model, focusing on Individual, Interpersonal, Organizational, Community, and Public Policy factors.
