This course examines theories of organizational behavior, development, and change using a multi-paradigmatic approach. Multiple paradigms and theories will be assessed for their utility, relevance, responsiveness to change, and attention to social, racial, economic, and environmental justice. Interprofessional conceptual frameworks, leadership theories, and trauma-informed human rights perspectives will be applied to the understanding of human service organizations as well. Special attention will be paid to theories that explain how organizations may advance human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental justice. While the focus of the course is on theoretical perspectives, students will develop skills for organizational development and leadership that are guided by organizational theories, such as foundational assessment and program evaluation skills to inform their practice in diverse settings. Updated course objectives: 1. Describe and critically assess multiple paradigmatic and theoretical approaches to understanding organizational behavior, development, and change. 2. Conduct cross-disciplinary comparative analyses of organizational development and change theories and critically assess their utility in advancing human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental justice through a trauma-informed anti-racist lens. 3. Critically analyze and apply organizational theories and interprofessional frameworks to facilitate engagement with human service organizations and communities. 4. Conduct an organizational needs assessment and identify theoretically-driven and empirically-supported interventions and strategies at the mezzo and macro levels of practice. 5. Understand cultural humility and apply anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at the organizational level. Changes voted on by UBSSW Faculty Council. This is in response to requests from instructors and faculty over the last few years. Full syllabus attached for review.
