From the unparalleled popularity of shows like Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte to numerous global adaptations of Pride and Prejudice in various languages, what is it about Regency romance that has had the audience hooked for three centuries? This course will explore the allure of the whirlwind romance of these adaptations that makes them so irresistible. We will read novels, and watch shows, and movies from across the world to discuss the racial and gendered formations that both inscribe and subvert women’s position in the regency society. These inscriptions and subversions are adapted in ways that resonate with contemporary audiences. We will ask what changes accompany these adaptations that make them relatable, if any. What racial-colonial relations make these romances possible? How do these adaptations address or alter these relations?
