In 1709, a twenty-seven-year-old Frenchman, Xavier de Maistre, put on his pajamas, took a journey to his bedroom, and wrote Journey around My Bedroom. This travelogue raises interesting questions about travels and travel writing. Travel is typically identified as physical movement to unfamiliar places, but can we travel in imagination instead? Or can we travel to routinized, mundane destinations, such as grocery stores, gas stations, or as in the case of de Maistre, our bedroom? These questions indicate that what shapes our travel experience is not where we travel but how we interpret that travel experience. Shifting focus from travel destinations to the travel mindset, this course asks students to produce their own travelogue and situate it within the conventions of the travel writing genre. Because this course is online asynchronous, students can write their travelogue about the town in which they reside during Winter 2025 (e.g. their hometown or Binghamton). Major writing assignments include three Reading Analyses as well as a restaurant review, a nature review, and an art gallery/museum/concert review. A special emphasis will be placed on enhancing students’ audience awareness and increasing their abilities to adapt to different rhetorical situations. This course is a four credit course, which means that students are expected to do at least 58 hours of course related work during each week of the Winter Session. This includes work done completing assigned readings, studying for tests and examinations, preparing written assignments, and other course-related tasks.
