Statistics is a powerful tool for liberal arts students. A basic understanding of statistics can help students to analyze and interpret insights from data, engage with research across a broad range of fields, and even critically examine the ways that statistical and computational methods are used in society. In this course, students will be introduced to basic statistical concepts, including probability, hypothesis testing, regression, and other foundational topics. No prior knowledge of statistics is required for this course, and lessons will emphasize the application of statistical concepts and methods rather than mathematical theory. Topics will be presented using lectures, course readings, and interactive activities using R statistical software, with respect to real-world examples of ways that statistics are used across the liberal arts. NOTE: Not open to students who have credit for any other course in statistics at the 200 level or higher. Students who have taken another statistics course at the 200+ level may be dropped from this course.
