This course aims to introduce and analyze traditional Chinese opera animations, guiding students to understand and recognize the representation of traditional Chinese art in animation. It also explores the characteristics of East-West artistic integration and the possible methods of achieving artistic exchange. As an important form of visual art, animation developed in China almost simultaneously with the West. The integration of traditional Chinese elements has shaped a unique style of animation in China, characterized by strong cultural symbols that have also profoundly influenced Western animation. The course will lead students to appreciate and analyze classic Chinese traditional animations, such as Havoc in Heaven, Nezha Conquers the Dragon King, and The Proud General, as well as Western animations inspired by Chinese culture, such as Mulan, Kung Fu Panda, and Turning Red. Through comparative analysis of these works, students will gain a deeper understanding of the fusion between traditional Chinese culture and Western animation art, prompting them to reflect on the significance and impact of cultural exchange in the field of animation. This course aims to stimulate students' interest in multiculturalism, guiding them to examine the complexity and importance of cultural exchange with an objective and rational perspective, thereby laying a solid foundation for future artistic creation and cultural understanding. Course delivery and assignments will be in English. The instructor will provide all the reading material as well as the audio/video files. No knowledge of Chinese history, culture, or language is required, but students need to have some basic knowledge to analyze and appreciate the animation and movie.
