This course surveys ancient historians’ treatments of foreign places and populations and analyzes their conceptions of ethnic and cultural difference. Readings include Herodotus’ description of Scythians, Egyptians, Indians, and Persians; Roman ethnographies of Celts, Germans, and Jews; “auto-ethnographies” by Babylonian and Egyptian scholars; compilations of “foreign customs” in the school of Aristotle; and early outsiders’ perspectives on Islam. Students examine the construction of race, ethnicity and otherness in antiquity and uncover the earliest foundations of modern anthropology.
