This course provides a short systematic overview of some of the key theoretical approaches to nation and nationalism, and the challenges and criticisms raised against them in a comparative perspective. The students will first be introduced to classical debates around nationalism, then critically analyze their limitations and problems addressed by different approaches, and finally explore recent alternative theoretical frameworks that can be used not only in studies of nationalism but also in other social scientific studies as well as for addressing the main practical challenges posed today by nationalist politics such as self-determination and migration. The course materials will mostly be theoretical but built on divergent historical cases from around the world.
