This course explores how translators play a critical role in situations of political, social, and cultural conflict. The course examines the challenges and responsibilities translators shoulder, and more importantly, the strategies and techniques translators adopt in contentious environments, where language can be both a bridge and a battleground. By the end of the course, students will have an in-depth understanding of 1) how translators and translation influence and are influenced by conflicts, including heir impact on international relations, diplomacy, media, and public perception; and 2) how ethical issues including neutrality, accuracy, and safety, and translator’s own subjectivity and political stance have on impact on the translation process and translated text.
