The course explores reading and writing in discipline-specific areas including science, social studies, and mathematics. The course also places a strong emphasis on close reading of expository texts and analysis of test data as a tool for planning instruction. Specifically, this course teaches candidates proficiency in providing instruction and assessment in cooperation with other school staff, including but not limited to creating instructional environments and teaching key aspects of literacy acquisition. In EDU 513, instruction focuses on vocabulary skills, study strategies, and strategies for building comprehension, constructing meaning, and building literacy in the content areas.
