This course will examine literature genres from the early period (1600s) through the Civil War (1865) in the Americas. Authors discussed may include Franklin, Paine, Irving, Poe, Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau, Melville, Whitman, Dickinson, Douglass, and Truth among others. Writers historically left out of the traditional canon shall also be included.
Prerequisites: ENG 101, English Composition I.
